In 2002, the U1000 / U2000 series has been upgraded. There are no major changes in exterior design of the trucks. One of the external features is a hood with a new grille. It has a wide ventilation slots and new «Unimog» label design, which is no longer on the right side, but on the left. New Unimogs received turn signals on front wings, which have been shifted down a bit, a new streamlined mirrors and modified design of air filter. The external lights are installed behind of the cab on special outriggers. This is very important parts for machines, often working with oversized attachments and replacement bodies. The interior has been changed more than exterior. The new dashboard received a red illumination. There is a a multi-functional display between the speedometer and tachometer, which displays information from the Driver Information System (DIS), such as information about modes of transmission, cruise control and even settings of the driver's seat. There is a tachograph and radio above the windscreen. The standard cab can be in 2- or 3-place variant. Custom could also offer a «Crew cab» with 4-door and 6-place. The new trucks can be offered with three variants of turbo-diesel Euro 3. All 4-cylinder intercooled. U3000 (GVW 7,5-8,5 tons) is equipped with a well-known OM 904 LA engine with a working volume of 4.25 liters and an output of 150 hp (580 Nm). U4000 (GVW 8,5-9,5 tons) has the same engine, but equipped with a pump-injectors with electronic control. It has 177 hp and 675 Nm. The new 4.8-liter turbodiesel OM 924 LA (218 hp, 810 Nm) is made especially for the heaviest models U5000 (GVW 12,5-14,1 tons). Transmission is 8-speed UG 100-8 with an electron-pneumatic switching mechanism Telligent. Such a system was firstly used in 1996 on the Actros truck.
