ZIL » 134

ZIL 134 (military index ATK-6) was a future development of a ZIS-E134 prototype. The first sample was collected on January 22 th, 1957, the second on March 4th. It was designed to work with a trailer with a GCVW of 15 tonnes and towing aircrafts at aerodromes with takeoff weight of up to 70 tonnes. Its main design feature was a unique 12-cylinder petrol engine, original hydromechanical transmission, all wheel independent suspension and a sealed hull with a smooth bottom, allows to force afloat small water obstacles. ZIL 134 could deliver up to 4 tonnes of ammunition or eight people in the metal flatbed platform.

A 10.4-liter OHV engine ZIL-E134 V12 with output of 240 hp, was two joined in one engines ZIL-E130 V6. Another important innovation was an automatic transmission, consisting of a torque converter and planetary 3-speed gearbox with automatic control. Then torque transfered to a 2-speed transfer gearbox, located between 2nd and 3rd axle. ZIL 134 was equipped with drum brakes, power steering, tyre air pressure control system and special tires 16.00 - 20. Dimensions - 7160x2700x2650 mm. Ground clearance increased to 470 mm, turning radius was reduced to 10 m. Curb weight - 10.6 tonnes, GVW - 15.0 tonnes.

The main disadvantage of ZIL 134 was very unstable engine which usually worked only on ten cylinders and developed no more than 200 hp. The prototype also had low efficiency and a complex transmission. Otherway, its offroad capability was on a level of tracked vehicles.
