Mercedes-Benz » N5 / N56

In 1927, a 5-ton 3-axle truck has been presented. It was the "N5" (6x4) model with a 6-cylinder 100 hp engine, all wheels with brakes and a compressor for tire inflation. After a passing sank into oblivion of a diesel engine, developments in this direction were continued by constructors of Daimler-Benz company Harts Nibel and Friedrich Nallinger. In 1927 according to their request Robert Bosch developed a new fuel injector and updated the process of the indirect mixing. Thus, all future Daimler-Benz diesel engines, which were working on low-grade fuel, had the "OM" index - shortening from Olmotor - oil engine. The first diesel of own design - the"OM5" - was a 6-cylinder (8550 cm3, 60 hp at 1300 rpm) and had a mass of 630 kg. In 1928 it has been installed on a 3-axle truck "N56" (6x4) with a cardan drive of both rear axles, could reached a maximum speed of 45 km/h. 3-axle buses were produced on the base of the N56 chassis in 1930.
