Development of the 150-tonnes 8-axle MAZ 7906 16x16 chassis started in 1983. The first prototype was made in June 1984 and sent to factory tests. It was joined by the second prototype later the year. It looks similar to the 7-axle MAZ 7904, but actually was lighter and shorter. For axles in the front are driveable. The prototype was fitted with two 2-seat cabins and 1500 hp marine diesel M-351.
The design of the MAZ 7906 was similar to the Model 7904 with two hydromanual 4-speed gearboxes with additional PTOs, and indepentent hydroair suspension. Curb weight is 68.3 tonnes, GVW - 220 tonnes. Overall dimentions - 26293x4850x3760 mm. Top speed - 30 kph. Turning radius - 30 meters.
