In 2013, the first prototype of a new MRAP KamAZ 53949 was presented. The armored vehicle is intended to transport up to 10 people or 2 tonnes of load, with their protection against small arms and explosive devices. The overall dimensions — 6400x2500x3300 mm. Ground clearance — 433 mm. Curb weight — 13.7 tonnes, GVW — 15.7 tonnes. It can be transported by air in IL 76 or AN 124 planes, as well as MI 26 helicopter.

The armored hull has protection of level 3 STANAG 4569 standard. It also provides protection from splinters of artillery shells or explosive devices. The V-shaped bottom of the hull diverts the blast wave to the sides of the body.

KamAZ 53949 is fitted with a Cummins 6ISBe 350 P-6 diesel rated at 350 hp. Gearbox is automatic by Allison. The suspension is hydroair independent with a tires inflation system. The bullet proof tires have size of 14.00 R20. Top speed — 100 kph. Range — 800-850 km.

A new version of the vehicle was presented at the 'Army 2017' military show. The new model got a refreshed front end and hood. The right designation is K-53949.
