Chevrolet » Tilt Cab series 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80

Totally new for the 1960 was a series of Tilt Cab trucks, included about 20 models, which were true Cab-Over-Engine models. As their name implies, the Tilt Cabs were of a design where the entire cab tilted forward in order to provide great access to the engine. The GVW of this series was from 19,500 to 25,000 lbs. The bumper-to-back of cab size was 72 inches. That means more space for body and payload, better weight distribution, and a big bonus is increased maneuverability. The tilt cab also gives better visibility. In 1960 only gasoline versions were presented. The first model in the range - the T60 - had GVW of 19,500 lbs (22,000 lbs in case of T60H) and produced as T62 (97-inch wheelbase), T63 (109-inch wheelbase), T66 (133-inch wheelbase) and T68 (145-inch wheelbase). The trucks of this model were equipped with serial 6-cylinder Jobmaster engine or optional Taskmaster V8. The medium model in the range - the T70 - had 23,000 lbs GVW, and the heaviest T80 had GVW of 25,000 lbs. These models were produced with the same sizes of wheelbase. These models were equipped with Workmaster V8 engines with an output of 185 hp (for T70) and 230 hp (for T80).

In 1962 the first diesel model in Tilt Cab range was presented - the heavy duty U80 with Chevy-GM-Detroit 6V-53N engine of 195 hp. One year later the company offered the full range of diesel trucks - N50 with GVW from 10,000 to 20,000 lbs with TorqFlow D351 engine, Y60 with GVW from 15,000 to 21,000 lbs (up to 24,000 for Y60H) and Chevy-GM-Detroit 4.53N engine of 130 hp, N60 and N60H with the same GVW rating and TorqFlow D478 or D478H engine, and N80 with GVW of 18,500 to 27,000 lbs and TorqFlow D478H engine.

Since 1966 the company started to use an updated designation of model with 2 letters and 5-place numeric index. At the same time with the presenting of the lightest series 40, Chevrolet shown the heaviest models in the range - the TM70000 with GVW of 25,000 to 32,000 lbs and GCW of 50,000 lbs; and the TM80000 with GCW of 65,000 lbs. Both were equipped with gasoline 401 V6 engine in standard, or 478 V6 of 237 hp as an option. Diesel models of the range received indices TG, TJ, TV and TW and were equipped with TorqFlow or Chevy-GM-Detroit engines with an output of 130-220 hp. The series also included tandem axle models WM80000 with gasoline 401 V6 engine with an output of 237 hp, GVW of 48,000 lbs and GCW of 65,000 lbs. In 1973 all models received light restyling.

My Dad drove a 1968 Chevy Cabover Identical to these. His business was "Hoods Tavern Specialties" and he Delivered Food goods to Eastern Washington and Western Idaho. I was only 9yrs old when he bought the cab New and I went on his routes all the time. It was so cool sitting so high up in that cab. Wish I could find one of these trucks to restore, it would be so cool!
