American LaFrance » Type 500 / 600

During the W.W.II the Army bought many Types 500 fire apparatus. There was no chrome on these trucks (although the Army models had some), and the matte paint reduced their reflective tendencies. They are also shared the painted mesh type grille. In 1942, American LaFrance introduced their new Type 600 pumpers, and the U.S. Navy soon procured some of these compact combination pumpers for use on Naval bases. They carried 1,250 gallon-per-minute centrifugal pumps with six discharge outlets, and had a big hard suction hose mounted around the front of the rig in "squirrel tail" fashion.
